ACTIVITIES

Winter

Skiing

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, located 10 minutes from Golden, BC, offers 1,260 meters (4,134 ft.) of breathtaking vertical – one of the highest in Canada

The resort also provides an incredible variety of terrain; three massive high alpine bowls; a mix of shoots, glades and steep terrain; long, soft, groomed slopes and gentle runs for beginners.

High-level moisture, sun and dry, low-level air help to create Kicking Horse’s famed champagne powder.

Lake Louise Mountain Resort delivers the most awe-inspiring panoramic views and memorable skiing you’ll ever experience. Located in the heart of Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Louise Ski Resort is consistently rated the most scenic resort in North America.

Lake Louise’s four mountain faces add up to a total of 4200 acres of skiable terrain. Louise offers some of the steepest terrain in the Rockies as well as beginner runs from the top of every chair; it is a destination made for everyone.

Snowmobiling

Golden has great terrain and snow conditions for snowmobiling. Golden is a snowmobiling community, with over one thousand kilometers (620 miles) of trail with beginner, intermediate and advanced ratings. Snowmobile tours offer a safe and easy introduction to Golden and an exciting winter recreation.

Spring, Summer and Fall

Gondola Rides

Float above the clouds as you are whisked to 7,700 ft on the Kicking Horse Gondola. Take in panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, the Columbia Valley Wetlands and the quaint town of Golden. During the journey spot wildlife and perhaps even a glimpse of Kicking Horse’s resident grizzly bear, Boo. At the summit, venture forth or simply soak up the endless mountain vistas from the top of the world. Also at the summit is the Eagle’s Eye Restaurant, Canada’s highest elevation five star dining experience.

Hiking

Wapta Falls is accessed relatively easy from the cabins via a 30 minute hike from the Trans Canada Highway. Well worth the effort, this hike is suitable for the whole family with the reward of an enjoyable outing to see Yoho’s largest waterfalls (third largest in Canada) backdropped by the jagged peaks of the Ottertail Mountain Range.

Takakkaw means “magnificent” in Cree. And it is. Nothing captures the awe and wonder of Yoho National Park like the tremendous thunder of Takakkaw Falls. Plunging from above a height of 380m (1246 ft) with a 254m (833 ft) freefall, Canada’s second highest waterfall leaves every visitor humbled. Just 30 minutes from the cabins by car and you can drive right to the base of the falls.

Other hiking destinations within a 45 minute drive of the cabins

  • Lake Louise
  • Emerald Lake
  • Valley of the Ten Peaks
  • Yoho Glacier

Golfing

The Golden Golf Course is located 25 minutes from the cabins. Score Magazine ranks Golden in the top 100 golf courses in Canada and the “Best Value in BC”. Its incredible natural setting beside the quiet Columbia River makes Golden a preferred golfing destination.

Whitewater Rafting

The Kicking Horse River is a World-Class whitewater river and the best rafting river in the Canadian Rockies. Some rapids consist of a number of rolling waves which provide a gentle roller-coaster style ride while other rapids consist of one or two large breaking waves, which douse the rafters with gallons of liquid fun. Between rapids, the gentler flow allows you to view the surrounding Rockies in all their splendor. The rafting companies start their packages literally within walking distance of the cabins.

Horseback Riding

Just 13 kms (8 miles) up the Beaverfoot Road you can go horseback riding at the Beaverfoot Lodge with guided trail rides through some of the prettiest back country you will ever see.

There are many other activities in the area that our on-site managers would be happy to introduce you to.
